20% Time in the Classroom
To help inspire innovation and creativity, Google offers its employees 20% of their time to work on a project of their choosing. Teachers who offer the same to their students can meet learning goals while creating powerful experiences that lead to increased motivation, creativity, and divergent critical thinking. This presentation will outline how to organize a 20% program, how to effectively communicate the rationale of the program to administrators, parents, and students, and how to execute the program so students are able to manage their time effectively for a successful final project.

A Blended Learning Ecosystem Built Within the Google Apps Core Suite
Dream with me for a second. What if we could achieve the "verbs" of what makes blended learning such a fantastic methodology by using tools that anyone with an internet connection can access 24/7. Through the use of the Google Apps Core Suite (Docs, Sites, Calendar, Mail) we are able to leverage tighter feedback loops and provide student-centric digital spaces for collaboration and sharing. We have access to an easy to use space for legacies and portfolios of higher level project(s), and ridiculously simple access points via mail and chat to the big three interactions we need to leverage; student/teacher, student/student, and student/content.

Using Assessment to Drive Instruction
Spreadsheets in Google Apps are an astounding tool for collecting and organizing assessment data. They allow anecdotal notes to be shared easily between teachers who work with the same students. Students' knowledge can be ranked on a scale (similar to the standards based progress reports used in elementary) and then sorted in order to form small groups for remediation or enrichment. These rankings can also highlight areas in which more focus is needed for the entire class. These spreadsheets are also helpful for seeing student growth throughout the quarter or year when working on progress reports.

Presenting the World: Using Google's Mapping Resources

Short description for catalog (30 words): Google Earth and Maps are about more than geography. Both include tools for you and your students to present history, literature, science, art and more in unique and interesting ways.

Longer description for website (200 words): Although many teachers use Google Earth and Maps to give students a better look at their world, you may not know that those resources also include tools that make them a great alternative to the common PowerPoint presentation, both for teachers and students.

In this fast-paced session, we'll demonstrate how to create a simple presentation with markers that include text, web links, images, audio and video recordings, and other media (and that works well with your interactive whiteboard). We'll also discuss how Earth and Maps could be used by students to build projects to demonstrate their learning in many academic areas. Those projects and presentations, as well as yours, can then be easily shared through Blackboard, email, and other methods of digital distribution. We'll also show where to find hundreds of presentations created by teachers and students that you can download and use the first day of school.

All of the resources used in this session, and many more to explore following the Institute, will be available on the web.

Bring your laptop with Google Earth installed (free download from http://www.google.com/earth) to follow along with the examples. Getting started only requires basic experience with Google Earth and/or maps.
